Hydraulic transmissivity inferred from ice-sheet relaxation following Greenland supraglacial lake drainages

چکیده
Abstract Surface meltwater reaching the base of Greenland Ice Sheet transits through drainage networks, modulating flow ice sheet. Dye and gas-tracing studies conducted in western margin sector sheet have directly observed efficiency to evolve seasonally along pathway. However, local evolution systems further inland, where thicknesses exceed 1000 m, remains largely unknown. Here, we infer system transmissivity based on surface uplift relaxation following rapid lake events. Combining field observations five events with a mathematical model laboratory experiments, show that decreases exponentially time, as water blister formed beneath drained permeates subglacial system. This deflation obeys universal law timescale reveals hydraulic indicates two-order-of-magnitude increase (from 0.8 ± 0.3 $${\rm{m}}{{\rm{m}}}^{3}$$ m 3 215 90.2 ) melt season progresses, suggesting significant changes basal hydrology lakes driven by seasonal input.

Sediment plume response to surface melting and supraglacial lake drainages on the Greenland ice sheet
Increased mass losses from the Greenland ice sheet and inferred contributions to sea-level rise have heightened the need for hydrologic observations of meltwater exiting the ice sheet. We explore whether temporal variations in ice-sheet surface hydrology can be linked to the development of a downstream sediment plume in Kangerlussuaq Fjord by comparing: (1) plume area and suspended sediment con...
متن کاملFracture propagation to the base of the Greenland Ice Sheet during supraglacial lake drainage.
Surface meltwater that reaches the base of an ice sheet creates a mechanism for the rapid response of ice flow to climate change. The process whereby such a pathway is created through thick, cold ice has not, however, been previously observed. We describe the rapid (<2 hours) drainage of a large supraglacial lake down 980 meters through to the bed of the Greenland Ice Sheet initiated by water-d...

متن کاملA comparison of supraglacial lake observations derived from MODIS imagery at the western margin of the Greenland ice sheet
Supraglacial lakes (SGLs) affect the dynamics of the Greenland ice sheet by storing runoff and draining episodically. We investigate the evolution of SGLs as reported in three datasets, each based on automated classification of satellite imagery. Although the datasets span the period 2001–10, there are differences in temporal sampling, and only the years 2005–07 are common. By subsampling the m...
متن کاملSubglacial lake drainage detected beneath the Greenland ice sheet
The contribution of the Greenland ice sheet to sea-level rise has accelerated in recent decades. Subglacial lake drainage events can induce an ice sheet dynamic response--a process that has been observed in Antarctica, but not yet in Greenland, where the presence of subglacial lakes has only recently been discovered. Here we investigate the water flow paths from a subglacial lake, which drained...
